The Great Outdoors

Nature That's Second To None

With six rafting companies located within a 20-minute drive from downtown, our natural surroundings are second to none. Go ahead and choose your pleasure...

Anglers can take their choice – our lakes and rivers boast healthy populations of pickerel, pike, bass, trout and catfish.

If you prefer to boat without a hook, line or sinker, you can cruise up to 500 km along the “Temiskawa Waterway”. This stretch of the Ottawa River has been outfitted with ramps and trailers to get you around the unnavigable stretches.

It won’t take you long to discover some of our best-kept secrets:

the spectacular Barron River Canyon

the Forest Lea ski trails

the Cycloparc and the Coulonge Chutes just across the river

And our night skies turn nature into a “24-7” event. We’re far enough removed from light pollution to give you a crystal-clear view of the Milky Way and the thousands of stars that surround it. Meteor showers, comets and regular appearances of the Northern Lights give us our own definition of “night life” in the Ottawa Valley!

Spending time in the great outdoors of the Ottawa Valley — it’s a natural decision!

Sports

Everything For The Sports Enthusiast

Pembroke is known as Hockey Town Canada. With three local names in the Hockey Hall of Fame, you know where our loyalties lie. Right here at home, we have Junior A Lumber Kings’ action every Sunday night from September through March. There’s also the International Silver Stick Tournament in Pembroke every November and December — the largest tourney of its kind in North America.

And the NHL is just over an hour down the road, at the Corel Centre where you’ll find the Ottawa Senators taking on the world.

In summer, our attention turns to golf. There are many fine courses in the region, and you’ll want to try them all out before you decide where to buy your membership. Soccer is another hotbed of local activity.

With the facilities of Base Petawawa at our disposal, our sports and recreational options are second to none.

The Arts In Pembroke And Petawawa

In Pembroke, the whole city is a work of art. Our buildings are adorned with more than 20 large-scale murals. They tell our stories from the past in a rich array of colours and artistic interpretations.

Each summer, the Valley Festival takes to the stage in a series of classical concerts held in churches throughout the region.

On a more casual basis, the City of Pembroke hosts free concerts at its Waterfront Amphitheatre EVERY NIGHT ALL SUMMER LONG!

There are also local drama and musical groups, public libraries and artisan tours to fill your creative yearnings.

We are also blessed to be within an easy drive of the National Capital, where you can enjoy Canada’s best performers at the National Arts Centre, our country’s art collection at the National Gallery, and the many museums and other facilities located there. You can get there in the time it takes most city-dwellers to get across town for an outing, without the heavy traffic they often face.

Events

There's Always Something Exciting To Do In Pembroke!

We may work hard in the Ottawa Valley, but we also know how to “play hard” too.

You’ll find all kinds of opportunities to join your neighbours for some good old-fashioned fun. From maple syrup season through summer festivals to Oktoberfest and into winter carnival time, your social calendar will be full.

Among the local highlights:

Labour Day weekend becomes “Fiddle Weekend” in Pembroke, when Riverside Park is taken over by fiddlers and step-dancers from throughout North America, here for our annual competition.

The Silver Stick Hockey Tournament, the largest of its kind in North America, provides great youth hockey action each November and December.

The best whitewater paddlers in the world meet on the Petawawa and Ottawa Rivers each summer to show off their daring and skills.

Civic Centre Days in Petawawa and the Waterfront Festival in Pembroke.

We even make winter fun — believe us, you’ll want to “Shiver on the River” when Pembroke hosts its annual ice fishing tournament and winter carnival.

Parks

Information About Local Parks And Recreation

Let’s start with Algonquin Park, the world-class nature preserve right on our doorstep. Most people need to plan their vacation months ahead and then hope for favourable weather. You can check for sunshine on a Saturday morning and be in your canoe or on the hiking trail, in the quietest regions of Algonquin Park, within an hour.

When you’re ready for a change, why not camp at Bonnechere Provincial Park or Driftwood Provincial Park? They, too, are just minutes away on the road, but miles away from your worries.

In 2005, Pembroke was awarded five blooms in the National Communities in Bloom competition. The City maintains a total of 170 acres of parks and green spaces. It has an official Green Policy Statement, as well as a tree inventory which has been maintained since 1984.

In town, both Pembroke and Petawawa have walking trails, bicycle paths, flower gardens and sports fields — the full variety of places for people to meet and play, with plenty of space for quiet meditation and solitary time when you feel the need.

Real Estate Tips
Relocation >Buying Out Of State

People who are moving to another state are usually concerned about how they will be able to monitor the purchase or sale of a home across state lines. Your local real estate agent can assist you in the process of buying or selling property out-of-state.

The National Association of Realtors is a nation-wide network of real estate sales professionals, similar to the local Association of Realtors. Almost every real estate professional is who is a member of the local association is also a member of the national organization. This professional affiliation among real estate agents all across the country works to your advantage when you buy or sell out-of-state property.

Your local real estate agent can contact an agency in the area where you want to buy or sell. When the relationship with the out-of-state real estate agent is established, your agent can coordinate arrangements by selecting houses for your consideration and helping you to strike a deal when you have made a selection. Having a local sales professional to help you work out any problems that may arise is a real plus.
